Article on social networks

There's a thoughtful article in The New Atlantis about social networks, mostly MySpace and FaceBook.

As the author concludes: "Social networking websites may make relationships more reliable, but whether those relationships can be humanly satisfying remains to be seen."

This blog isn't part of a social network, or, if it is, it's a small network that's seldom used. Some blogs, using Blogger, or similar services, are more so. Nonetheless, I am always grateful when anyone comments on a post.

Thanks for reading, whoever you are (if you are anyone!).

  3. Blogs do tend to form social networks, even if they're ad hoc ones. It's all those links—the power of the Web in action. MySpace and Facebook may be more self-contained, but I think that is actually more of a disadvantage than an advantage. Really, most of the Web is a social network; anyone who can publish on it can have an interaction with anyone else, in public. The genius of blogging services is that they make it so easy to publish.

I started out writing a totally different comment and ended up rambling. I hope some thoughts in here are at least interesting.
