gods are commanded to worship God

Psalm 97:7 is a remarkable verse: All worshipers of images are put to shame,
who make their boast in worthless idols;
worship him, all you gods! (ESV)

I checked, using the Blueletter Bible's "Available Translations and Versions" for that verse, and the English translations are unanimous -- they all include a command to "gods" to worship God. Remarkable? What does that mean?

I'm not sure. But why should I understand the entire Bible?

Thanks for reading.

  1. LOL.

    If it's of any interest to you, the JPS commentary I have on that verse says, "This degrades the other deities more than 96:4-5, showing progression in these psalms."

    And JPS has the translation as:
    "All who worship images,
    who vaunt their idols,
    are dismayed;
    all divine beings bow down to Him."

    I suppose it would be dismaying if your god was bowing to another God ...

    Take care & God bless
