The last words of Jacob -- Genesis 49:1 Jacob called to his sons, and said: “Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which will happen to you in the days to come.
2 Assemble yourselves, and hear, you sons of Jacob.
Listen to Israel, your father. ...
8 “Judah, your brothers will praise you.
Your hand will be on the neck of your enemies.
Your father’s sons will bow down before you.
10a The scepter will not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
until he comes to whom it belongs. ...
28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father spoke to them, and blessed them. He blessed everyone according to his own blessing. 29 He instructed them, and said to them, “I am to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite as a burial place. 31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah, his wife. There they buried Isaac and Rebekah, his wife, and there I buried Leah: 32 the field and the cave that is therein, which was purchased from the children of Heth.” 33 When Jacob finished charging his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, breathed his last breath, and was gathered to his people.
Joseph: Genesis 50:24 Joseph said to his brothers*, “I am dying, but God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” 25 Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.” 26 So Joseph died, being one hundred ten years old, and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
*Probably means his relatives, including his offspring, not strictly his brothers. It is likely that some of Joseph’s eleven brothers were dead by this time.
Moses: Deuteronomy 31:1 Moses went and spoke these words to all Israel. 2 He said to them, “I am one hundred twenty years old today. I can no more go out and come in. Yahweh has said to me, ‘You shall not go over this Jordan.’ 3 Yahweh your God himself will go over before you. He will destroy these nations from before you, and you shall dispossess them. Joshua will go over before you, as Yahweh has spoken. 4 Yahweh will do to them as he did to Sihon and to Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land; whom he destroyed. 5 Yahweh will deliver them up before you, and you shall do to them according to all the commandment which I have commanded you. 6 Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”
7 Moses called to Joshua, and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which Yahweh has sworn to their fathers to give them; and you shall cause them to inherit it. 8 Yahweh himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged.” . . .
Deuteronomy 32: 43 Rejoice, you nations, with his people,
for he will avenge the blood of his servants.
He will take vengeance on his adversaries,
and will make atonement for his land and for his people.†
44 Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he and Joshua the son of Nun. 45 Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel. 46 He said to them, “Set your heart to all the words which I testify to you today, which you shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law. 47 For it is no vain thing for you; because it is your life, and through this thing you shall prolong your days in the land, where you go over the Jordan to possess it.”
Joshua: Joshua 24:22 Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen Yahweh yourselves, to serve him.”
They said, “We are witnesses.”
23 “Now therefore put away the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart to Yahweh, the God of Israel.”
24 The people said to Joshua, “We will serve Yahweh our God, and we will listen to his voice.”
25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem. 26 Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of Yahweh. 27 Joshua said to all the people, “Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us, for it has heard all Yahweh’s words which he spoke to us. It shall be therefore a witness against you, lest you deny your God.” 28 So Joshua sent the people away, each to his own inheritance.
David: 1 Chronicles 29:10 Therefore David blessed Yahweh before all the assembly; and David said, “You are blessed, Yahweh, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. 11 Yours, Yahweh, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty! For all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, Yahweh, and you are exalted as head above all. 12 Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all! In your hand is power and might! It is in your hand to make great, and to give strength to all! 13 Now therefore, our God, we thank you, and praise your glorious name. 14 But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. 15 For we are strangers before you, and foreigners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is no remaining. 16 Yahweh our God, all this store that we have prepared to build you a house for your holy name comes from your hand, and is all your own. 17 I know also, my God, that you try the heart, and have pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of my heart I have willingly offered all these things. Now I have seen with joy your people, who are present here, offer willingly to you. 18 Yahweh, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep this desire forever in the thoughts of the heart of your people, and prepare their heart for you; 19 and give to Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep your commandments, your testimonies, and your statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, for which I have made provision.”
20 Then David said to all the assembly, “Now bless Yahweh your God!”
Jesus: Matthew 28:18 Jesus came to them and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. [This is often called The Great Commission.]
Paul: Acts 20:18 When they had come to him, he said to them, “You yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you all the time, 19 serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears, and with trials which happened to me by the plots of the Jews; 20 how I didn’t shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, teaching you publicly and from house to house, 21 testifying both to Jews and to Greeks repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus. 22 Now, behold, I go bound by the Spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there; 23 except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions wait for me. 24 But these things don’t count; nor do I hold my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to fully testify to the Good News of the grace of God.
25 “Now, behold, I know that you all, among whom I went about preaching God’s Kingdom, will see my face no more. 26 Therefore I testify to you today that I am clean from the blood of all men, 27 for I didn’t shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. 28 Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the assembly of the Lord and God which he purchased with his own blood. 29 For I know that after my departure, vicious wolves will enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Men will arise from among your own selves, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. 31 Therefore watch, remembering that for a period of three years I didn’t cease to admonish everyone night and day with tears. 32 Now, brothers, I entrust you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build up, and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33 I coveted no one’s silver, gold, or clothing. 34 You yourselves know that these hands served my necessities, and those who were with me. 35 In all things I gave you an example, that so laboring you ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” [That last quotation, from Jesus, is not found in any of the Gospels, but it is consistent with Jesus’ teaching.]

Musings on science, the Bible, and fantastic literature (and sometimes basketball and other stuff).
God speaks to us through the Bible and the findings of science, and we should listen to both types of revelation.

Does the Bible really say that? Excerpt from my book, 38
What are Christ’s commandments?
Many of them are found in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew
5-7). Some of the commands in that Sermon are to keep our motives pure – don’t
even want to commit adultery or murder; be reconciled to others, and forgive
them; turn the other cheek; love even your enemies; don’t draw attention to
your good deeds; don’t be anxious about worldly possessions; judge yourselves
before judging others; beware of false prophets.
The Golden Rule is
found in Matthew 7:12 “Therefore whatever you desire for men to do to you, you
shall also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets.”
Christ also told us to live the summary of the Old Testament
Law:
Matthew 22:37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord
your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38
This is the first and great
commandment. 39 A second likewise is
this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 The whole law and the
prophets depend on these two commandments.”
Note – Here is the first of the two commandments, in
context:
Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, Israel: Yahweh is our God. Yahweh is
one. 5 You shall love Yahweh your God
with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. 6 These
words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; 7 and you shall teach
them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your
house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise
up. 8 You shall bind them for a sign on your hand, and they shall be for
frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the door posts of your
house, and on your gates. 10 It shall be, when Yahweh your God brings you into
the land which he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to
give you, great and goodly cities, which you didn’t build, 11 and houses full
of all good things, which you didn’t fill, and cisterns dug out, which you
didn’t dig, vineyards and olive trees, which you didn’t plant, and you shall
eat and be full; 12 then beware lest you
forget Yahweh, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of
bondage. 13 You shall fear Yahweh your God; and you shall serve him, and
shall swear by his name. 14 You shall not go after other gods, of the gods of
the peoples who are around you; 15 for Yahweh your God among you is a jealous
God; lest the anger of Yahweh your God be kindled against you, and he destroy
you from off the face of the earth. 16 You shall not tempt Yahweh your God, as
you tempted him in Massah. 17 You shall diligently keep the commandments of
Yahweh your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he has commanded
you. 18 You shall do that which is right
and good in Yahweh’s sight; that it may be well with you, and that you may go
in and possess the good land which Yahweh swore to your fathers, 19 to
thrust out all your enemies from before you, as Yahweh has spoken.
The second part of what Jesus said is taken from Leviticus,
which is more inclusive than the part quoted in Matthew 22:39:
Leviticus 19:17 “‘You shall not hate your brother in your
heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him.
18 “‘You shall not
take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people; but
you shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am Yahweh.
33 “‘If a stranger lives as a foreigner with you in your
land, you shall not do him wrong. 34 The
stranger who lives as a foreigner with you shall be to you as the native-born
among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you lived as foreigners
in the land of Egypt. I am Yahweh your God.
In Mark 12:14-19, Jesus commanded His listeners to honor the
government, including paying taxes. We should remember that this was an
occupying government, and its head was a Roman pagan emperor.
There is an implied command, sometimes called The Great Compassion, to help
unfortunate people:
Matthew 25:34 Then the King will tell those on his right
hand, ‘Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from
the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry, and you gave me food to eat.
I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you took me in. 36
I was naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in
prison, and you came to me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when
did we see you hungry, and feed you; or thirsty, and give you a drink? 38 When
did we see you as a stranger, and take you in; or naked, and clothe you? 39
When did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you?’
40 “The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you,
because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
There are other commands, but one more, often called The Great Commission, is found in the
last words of Matthew’s gospel:
Matthew 28:19 Go, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20a teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with
you always, even to the end of the age.

Science: Thekidshouldseethis.com is a blog of cool

Todd's blog reports that changing
a protein slightly doesn't necessarily mean that it won't function
-- in other words, all mutations are not bad. Furthermore, there is evidence, in the experiments he reports on, that a protein can take on a
new function. (Note -- Todd is a Young-Earth Creationist.)
Politics: Wired has a page that lets you check on who is contributing to political candidates.
(Some contributions are anonymous.) I discovered that my Congressperson's largest named contributor was something called the American Crystal Sugar
Company Political Action Committee.
The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association has removed Mormons (Latter-Day Saints) from their list of cults, apparently for political purposes.
