Sunspots 264

Things I have recently spotted that may be of interest to someone else:

Science:NPR reports that Einstein's brain, which was removed surreptitiously when he died, has, sort of, helped us learn how the brain really works.

NPR also reports on an archaeological burial site. Most likely, those buried there were Roman gladiators.

A report in Business Week indicates that acupuncture may really help deal with pain, and gives a possible method by which it does so.

I heard this! I was most interested in the fact that through that study they now believe astrocytes are more than just supportive cells, that they actually transmit impulses!

Interesting stuff - - -

Yes. I hadn't heard that before. Of course I haven't seen a textbook for five years.

Thanks, Keetha.

Well, my Anatomy text was about five or less years old and it still listed astrocytes as neuroglial cells whose function was support in various forms.

Too bad I heard the NPR story AFTER finals, so couldn't "update" my students.

Yes. Too bad.

Thanks.
