A. W. Tozer on beauty

Tozer on beauty

A. W. Tozer was a pastor and author. The quote above is taken from his The Pursuit of God, which is in the public domain. (The book is available free, here, in several digital formats, and also available from Amazon, for 99 cents.)

Tozer wrote, as follows:
It is my own belief ... that every good and beautiful thing which man has produced in the world has been the result of his faulty and sin-blocked response to the creative Voice sounding over the earth.

Thanks for reading, and looking. Read Tozer.

Thank you so much for the post. I am so glad I found your page. I am reading The Pursuit of God right now and I have a hard time understanding the quote you mentioned above. It's probably because English isn't my first language...

Would you please explain what Tozer is saying here? The part the puzzle me the most is "the result of his faulty and sin-blocked response"

faulty response?
sin-blocked response?

I am dying to find out what he mean by these. I would very much appreciate if you can explain what Tozer is saying here. Thank you so much in advance!!

As I understand it, Tozer is saying that all good and beautiful things come from God, directly or indirectly -- He gave humans the ability to create good and beautiful things, and He also gave nature goodness and beauty. Because of the Fall, our ability to do this is spoiled -- we can't produce things as good and beautiful as we could have if humanity hadn't fallen. Therefore, our attempts are faulty, partly blocked by sin. Sometimes, of course, because we are sinful, we actually try to create ugly or evil things, and succeed, at least partly.

I hope that helps. Thanks for your comment.

Martin, thank you so much for the reply. I truly appreciate it.

No matter how many times I read it, to me it sounded as if Tozer is saying that every good and beautiful things man had produced has been the result of his faulty and sin-blocked response to God's voice.

So I was scratching my head... wondering how can our faulty and sin-blocked response of God's voice produce good and beautiful things.

So when you said we do so directly or indirectly, that made sense.

I guess my main problem is that I still can't fully grasp what "faulty and sin-blocked response" really is.

Anyway thanks again for your reply Thank you so much!!

Well, I'm not sure that anyone can fully grasp what our faulty and sin-blocked response is, because we have never been able to create or produce anything without us, as creators, being somewhat spoiled by the Fall, so have nothing un-blocked to compare our productions to. Presumably, in the Final Kingdom, we won't be blocked.

Thanks.
