Numbers 26:58 These are the families of Levi: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, and the family of the Korahites. Kohath became the father of Amram. 59 The name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. She bore to Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister.
Exodus 2:1 A man of the house of Levi went and took a
daughter of Levi as his wife. 2 The woman conceived and bore a son. When she
saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months. 3 When she could no
longer hide him, she took a papyrus basket for him, and coated it with tar and
with pitch. She put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s
bank. 4 His sister [Miriam] stood far off, to see what would be done to him. 5
Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe at the river. Her maidens walked along by
the riverside. She saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her servant to get
it. 6 She opened it, and saw the child, and behold, the baby cried. She had
compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”
7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Should I go
and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child
for you?”
8 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.”
The young woman went and called the child’s mother. 9
Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away, and nurse him for me,
and I will give you your wages.”
Exodus 15:19 For the horses of Pharaoh went in with his
chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and Yahweh brought back the waters
of the sea on them; but the children of Israel walked on dry land in the middle
of the sea. 20 Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in
her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with
dances. 21 Miriam answered them,
“Sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously. He has
thrown the horse and his rider into the sea.”
Numbers 12:1 Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of
the Cushite woman whom he had married; for he had married a Cushite woman. 2 They
said, “Has Yahweh indeed spoken only with Moses? Hasn’t he spoken also with
us?” And Yahweh heard it.
3 Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all the men
who were on the surface of the earth. 4 Yahweh spoke suddenly to Moses, to
Aaron, and to Miriam, “You three come out to the Tent of Meeting!”
The three of them came out. 5 Yahweh came down in a pillar
of cloud, and stood at the door of the Tent, and called Aaron and Miriam; and
they both came forward. 6 He said, “Now hear my words. If there is a prophet
among you, I, Yahweh, will make myself known to him in a vision. I will speak
with him in a dream. 7 My servant Moses is not so. He is faithful in all my
house. 8 With him, I will speak mouth to mouth, even plainly, and not in
riddles; and he shall see Yahweh’s form. Why then were you not afraid to speak
against my servant, against Moses?” 9 Yahweh’s anger burned against them; and
he departed.
10 The cloud departed from over the Tent; and behold, Miriam
was leprous, as white as snow. Aaron looked at Miriam, and behold, she was
leprous.
11 Aaron said to Moses, “Oh, my lord, please don’t count
this sin against us, in which we have done foolishly, and in which we have
sinned. 12 Let her not, I pray, be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half
consumed when he comes out of his mother’s womb.”
13 Moses cried to Yahweh, saying, “Heal her, God, I beg
you!”
14 Yahweh said to Moses, “If her father had but spit in her
face, shouldn’t she be ashamed seven days? Let her be shut up outside of the
camp seven days, and after that she shall be brought in again.”
15 Miriam was shut up outside of the camp seven days, and
the people didn’t travel until Miriam was brought in again. 16 Afterward the
people traveled from Hazeroth, and encamped in the wilderness of Paran.
Numbers 20:1 The children of Israel, even the whole
congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month. The people
stayed in Kadesh. Miriam died there, and was buried there.
Micah 6:3 My people, what have I done to you? How have I
burdened you? Answer me! 4 For I brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and
redeemed you out of the house of bondage. I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and
Miriam.
