Things I have recently spotted that may
be of interest to someone else:
The Arts: Connie Willis, winner of Nebula and Hugo awards, on why
she is fascinated by stories about time travel.
Health: NPR reports on how people eat
more food that isn't all good for them when their sports team loses,
and less when it wins.
NPR also reports on "Mountain Dew Mouth," and, in particular, how some
health professionals want to restrict the intake of soft drinks with sugar and acid.
The BBC reports on a 'dramatic' drop in the number of HIV infections, world-wide.
Science: A golden eagle has been photographed in the act of attacking (and bringing down) a deer, with a report by Nature World News.

Musings on science, the Bible, and fantastic literature (and sometimes basketball and other stuff).
God speaks to us through the Bible and the findings of science, and we should listen to both types of revelation.
The title is from Psalm 84:11.
The Wikipedia is usually a pretty good reference. I mostly use the World English Bible (WEB), because it is public domain. I am grateful.

I have written an e-book, Does the Bible Really Say That?, which is free to anyone. To download that book, in several formats, go here.

Sunspots 287
Things I have recently spotted that may be of interest to someone else:
Science: Science News reports that scientists have discovered some unique proteins in the immune systems of people who have been infected with the HIV virus for years, but not developed the disease. They don't yet know the mechanism of this immunity.

A blog entitled The New Creationism has posted "The top five challenges for creationist geology."
A Canadian team of scientists have apparently transformed adult skin cells into blood cells. This has tremendous potential in medicine, and by-passes any objections against using embryonic cells in research.
Politics: I didn't know the official name of the state commonly referred to as Rhode Island until the recent election, when voters rejected an attempt to change the name.
Christianity: Ken Schenck wonders, among other things, why US churches (many of them) have national flags prominently displayed.

A new gene, within the past 100 years
The Panda's Thumb presents a summary of the evidence that a new gene (probably more than one) has arisen within the past century, in HIV. (That's the AIDS virus.)
This should not be a surprise to anyone. However, according to the blog post I cited in the previous paragraph, Michael Behe's book, The Edge of Evolution, has this statement, about that same virus: "There is no new molecular machinery." It must, therefore, be a surprise to Behe. I have not yet read Behe's new book. His previous book, Darwin's Black Box, is one of the pillars of the Intelligent Design movement. In it, Behe claimed that some biological phenomena were so complex that they could not have been developed over time by natural selection, but would have required a Designer. The Panda's Thumb has produced explanations, relying only on natural selection, for all of the phenomena Behe wrote about.
I believe that God designed natural selection.
Thanks for reading.
